Ectopic intrathyroidal thymus accompanied by intrathyroidal parathyroid as a cause of a solitary thyroid nodule in adult.

چکیده
Ectopic intrathyroidal thymic tissue can form a mass lesion within the thyroid gland and has rarely been reported in children. We report a case of intrathyroidal thymus accompanied by an intrathyroidal parathyroid gland in a 29-year-old woman who visited our hospital due to right neck mass diagnosed as metastatic papillary carcinoma by aspiration cytology in an outside hospital. She had a history of right thyroidectomy due to papillary thyroid carcinoma three years ago. Ultrasonographic examination of the left thyroid gland showed a well-defined hyperechoic nodule, which did not show change in size compared with the previous study. She underwent complete thyroidectomy with right neck dissection. Grossly, the left thyroid had a well demarcated pale yellow nodule measuring 0.9 cm in diameter. On microscopic examination, the nodule was composed of mature fat tissue, ectopic thymic tissue with Hassall's corpuscles, and an intrathyroidal parathyroid gland. This is an exceedingly rare case of ectopic intrathyroidal thymus with intrathyroidal parathyroid gland, in an adult.

Incidental Findings with Technetium-99m Methoxyisobutrlisonitrile Imaging of Ectopic Parathyroid Hyperplasia in Patient with Intrathyroidal Parathyroid Hyperplasia
We report a case of intrathyroidal and ectopic parathyroid hyperplasia in a 47-year-old female patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism. During evaluation for end stage renal disease, hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism were detected in laboratory exam and thyroid nodules were found in computed tomography, and thyroid ultrasonography. In subsequent dual-phase technetium-99m methoxyisobutrli...
متن کاملIntrathyroidal Parathyroid Carcinoma: Report of an Unusual Case and Review of the Literature
Intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma is an exceedingly rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. A 51-year-old African American female presented with goiter, hyperparathyroidism, and symptomatic hypercalcemia. Sestamibi scan revealed diffuse activity within an enlarged thyroid gland with uptake in the right thyroid lobe suggestive of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. The patient underwent t...
متن کاملIntrathyroidal thymic tissue mimicking a malignant thyroid nodule in a 4-year-old child
Intrathyroidal thymic tissue is rare and may be confused with a malignant thyroid nodule because of hyperechoic dots mimicking calcifications. We report the case of a thyroid nodule with malignant ultrasonographic findings in a 4-year-old child, which was confirmed cytologically as ectopic thymic tissue. The sonographic findings of ectopic thymus were similar to those of the thymus; therefore, ...

Intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma is extremely rare clinical entity with potentially multiple diagnostic pitfalls. We report a case of 40-year-old man presented with classical manifestations of primary hyperparathyroidism, severe hypercalcemia and profoundly increased serum parathyroid hormone level. Neck ultrasonography demonstrated multinodular goiter with predominant 34 mm nodule in left ...
متن کاملConcurrent intrathyroidal thymus and parathyroid in a patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma: a challenging diagnosis
During embryogenesis, the thymus and inferior parathyroid glands develop from the third pharyngeal pouch and migrate to their definite position. During this process, several anatomic variations may arise, with the thyroid being one of the most common sites of ectopic implantation for both organs. Here, we report the case of a young female patient, who underwent total thyroidectomy for papillary...
